Softball Drops First Game of 2020, Splits Day 2 in Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Six days after Dawn Bodrug tossed a perfect game, the Stony Brook softball team had the tables turned on it Saturday.

With a runner placed on second base to start the half-inning, Bodrug surrendered a walk-off squeeze bunt to Shannon Glover as North Florida defeated the Seawolves, 1-0, in nine innings on Saturday afternoon.

North Florida's Morgan Clausen threw a perfect game, striking out nine.

Stony Brook suffered its first loss after winning its opening seven games of the season. That streak included a 5-1 win over Akron earlier in the day as well as Bodrug's perfect game last Sunday against Cornell in Maderia Beach, Fla.

The Seawolves (7-1) had been the nation's last remaining unbeaten team. The 7-0 start was the second best in program history, trailing only a 10-0 start in 1991.

Melissa Rahrich tossed a complete game in the Game 1 win over Akron on Saturday. The two-time America East Player of the Year allowed a run on five hits while striking out six in her second start of the season.

"It was good to beat Akron back to back," coach Megan Bryant said. "Mel threw a real solid game and the top of our order came up big."

The Seawolves got the scoring started in bottom of the first. Jourdin Hering hit a leadoff double. Three straight walks then plated a run. They scored their second run of the inning on a bases-loaded double play.

Riley Craig drove in a run in the fifth, followed by a two-run sixth for the Seawolves. Hering brought Corinne Badger home with a double, the third hit of the day for the senior, to cap the scoring.

Game 2 was a pitchers' duel. Coming off a 15-strikeout perfect game, Bodrug allowed only three hits in 8 1/3 innings.

Bodrug got into a jam in the bottom of the fifth, when a walk and infield single put runners on the corners with two outs. After a delayed steal put two runners in scoring position, the junior induced a pop-up to end the inning.

The Ospreys advanced a runner to third base with two outs in the eighth, but Bodrug got Kayla McGory to pop out to end the inning.

In extra innings, a runner is placed on second base to begin each frame.

In the ninth, Lindsey Osmer moved Taylor Juenke to third with a bunt, but Clausen struck out Badger and got Shauna Nuss to ground out to end the threat.

In the bottom half, Glover's squeeze bunt with one out scored McGory to win the game.

"UNF is the best team we have played so far, but we sure didn't help ourselves at all offensively," Bryant said. "Pitching and our defense kept us in it but we didn't make the adjustments we needed to."

The Seawolves return to action Sunday with a pair of games, beginning with Virginia Tech at 10 a.m. and followed by the trip finale against co-host Jacksonville.
