JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — On Saturday,
Dawn Bodrug was on the short end of an extra-inning pitchers' duel, tossing 8 1/3 innings before falling to North Florida.
Less than 24 hours later, it happened again.
The Stony Brook softball team fell to host Jacksonville, 2-1, in eight innings on Sunday afternoon.
The Seawolves dropped both games on the final day at the JU/UNF Spring Break Challenge.
The team also fell to No. 19 Virginia Tech, 6-1, earlier in the day.
"It was a tough day for us in terms of scoring runs and timely hitting," coach Megan Bryant said. "We had our chances against Jacksonville to push runs across. Our defense was terrific all day and came up big several times."
Stony Brook (7-3) faced Preseason All-ACC pitcher Keely Rochard in Game 1. After tossing two shutouts, including a no-hitter on Saturday, Rochard carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning on Sunday before eventually topping the Seawolves, 6-1.
After taking a 2-0 advantage on an error and a pair of hits, Virginia Tech (16-4) doubled its lead on a two-run homer by Mackenzie Lawter in the third inning. The Hokies added two more in the sixth against
Melissa Rahrich.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh,
Riley Craig hit her first homer of the year to end the no-hit bid and break up the shutout.
Shelbi Denman started in the circle for the Seawolves, lasting 2 2/3 innings before being replaced by Rahrich after the homer.
In Game 2, Dolphins starting pitcher Skylar Whitty held the Seawolves offense scoreless through four, until a
Lindsey Osmer single and
Corinne Badger walk put two runners on. Osmer then scored on a fielding error with two outs to plate the game's first run.
Bodrug allowed a baserunner in each of the first two innings of the game, but didn't face much trouble until the sixth, when Hannah Roberts hit a solo homer to tie the score at 1.
In the bottom of the eighth, Caroline Watson hit a pinch-hit, walk-off double to win the game for the Dolphins.
Bodrug pitched all 7 1/3 innings, allowing three hits and striking out nine.
The Seawolves return to action next weekend at the Towson DeMarini Tiger Clash in Maryland. The team will play four games, beginning on Friday against Iona at 12:30 p.m.
"We have our takeaways from a good weekend of competition and will go back to work this week," Bryant said.
