TOWSON, Md. — Entering the weekend,
Dawn Bodrug ranked second in the America East in strikeouts.
After Friday's performance, she's moved into first — with some room for comfort.
Bodrug struck out 18 batters and allowed only one hit in a 6-0 win against Iona on Friday afternoon at the DeMarini Tiger Clash.
It was the junior's fifth complete game of the season.
"It's a great feeling having such a strong team behind me," Bodrug said. "It builds my confidence every day and allows me to go out there and get the job done for my team. It really has been such a blast pitching this season so far."
Stony Brook (8-3) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, when
Lindsey Osmer's two-out, bases-loaded single brought home
Jourdin Hering.
It was all the run support Bodrug needed.
The junior's first 11 outs came via the strikeout. Ciarra Diguilio's groundout to third base in the fourth was the first ball put in play by the Gaels (1-4).
Allie Taylor's infield single was Iona's lone hit of the day.
Hering reached base three times, driving in two runs. Osmer also had a pair of RBIs in the win.
"We put together a terrific effort today in less than ideal conditions," coach Megan Bryant said. "I liked our grittiness to get the job done. Offensively, we were productive and kept the pressure on throughout the game. Dawn was dominant and threw a great game."
The teams are back in action on Saturday, with first pitch set for noon at the Tiger Softball Complex.
