LOWELL, Mass. — For the second time in a week, the Stony Brook women's basketball team took on UMass Lowell. And for the second time in that span, the Seawolves emerged victorious in convincing fashion.
Stony Brook's record-setting season continued Wednesday with an 89-69 road win against the River Hawks.
The Seawolves earned their 19th straight victory, the second-longest winning streak in the nation, trailing only Gonzaga (20 straight).
Stony Brook improved to 22-1 overall and 10-0 in the America East with six games remaining in the regular season.
"I thought we played with pretty good energy today," said head coach
Caroline McCombs. "We came out pretty sharp, ready to go. UMass Lowell made some runs but I thought we were able to withstand those."
The Seawolves also beat UMass Lowell last Wednesday at Island Federal Arena, that time by a 60-41 score.
In the second meeting, Stony Brook erupted for a season-high 46 points over the opening two quarters and took a 16-point lead into halftime.
Kaela Hilaire led the Seawolves with 22 points, one shy of matching her season high.
"It's always tough to win on the road,"
Kaela Hilaire said. "We came out playing hard and running the floor in transition, which got my teammates open shots and eventually opens it up for everyone to score, including me."
Four Stony Brook players scored in double-figures in all.
Victoria Johnson had 15 points, followed by
India Pagan with 12 and
Cheyenne Clark with 11.
Stony Brook returns home Saturday to face New Hampshire at 2 p.m.
