STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Elijah Olaniyi is back. And the second-seeded Stony Brook men's basketball team is onto the America East Tournament semifinals with a 76-73 win against seventh-seeded UAlbany on Saturday night at Island Federal Arena.
Makale Foreman drained a game-tying three-pointer with 1 minute, 46 seconds remaining. And
Miles Latimer converted a pair of free throws with 51.9 seconds to go to give Stony Brook a lead that it did not relinquish.
Stony Brook will host a semifinal game against Hartford on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
"Obviously a high-level college basketball game," coach
Geno Ford said. "The second half, it's as well as we have played in months — arguably all year."
The Seawolves had used a 10-0 second-half run to overcome a seven-point deficit. They eventually built a 66-60 lead with five minutes remaining.
In a one-minute span during the spurt, Olaniyi produced a driving layup, drained a three-pointer, then produced a steal and fed
Mouhamadou Gueye for a dunk that electrified the crowd and prompted a timeout from UAlbany.
"The atmosphere tonight was outstanding," Ford said.
However, UAlbany retook the lead, 68-66, on Cameron Healy's layup with 3:39 to go. Healy finished with a game-high 28 points.
"Healy was outstanding," Ford said. "Fortunately we're moving on because we made some huge plays the last couple of minutes."
Olaniyi, a first-team All-America East selection, returned to the starting lineup for the first time since departing a Feb. 8 game at New Hampshire with an ankle injury. After a five-game absence, Olaniyi logged 18 minutes off the bench in the regular-season finale on Tuesday at UMBC.
"The first half he struggled. The second half he looked more like the old Elijah," said Ford, who nonetheless noted that Olaniyi's 36-inch vertical leap and sharp bursts have not yet fully returned.
Five Seawolves scored in double-figures: Foreman (23 points), Gueye (14), Latimer (13),
Andrew Garcia (12) and Olaniyi (11).
Stony Brook (20-12) had swept the home-and-home regular-season series from the Great Danes.
As for the upcoming matchup with third-seeded Hartford, Stony Brook lost both games during the regular season.
"This group is real hungry," Foreman said.
