STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Stony Brook student-athletes distinguished themselves in athletic competition during the winter and abbreviated spring seasons. They also did quite nicely in the classroom compared with their America East brethren.

In all, 237 student-athletes who participated in winter or spring sports at Stony Brook achieved at least a 3.0 GPA during the spring semester.

Stony Brook was one of only three America East schools to have 90 percent of its in-season student-athletes achieve that GPA threshold.

The Stony Brook softball and women's track and field teams led the way. Both had all of their student-athletes produce at least a 3.0 GPA in the spring.

All the programs distinguished themselves, though. Women's lacrosse had 97 percent of its student-athletes achieve a 3.0 GPA, while women's basketball and men's lacrosse each had 94 percent, men's track and field had 85 percent, women's swimming and diving had 82 percent, baseball had 81 percent and men's basketball had 71 percent.

Thirty in-season student-athletes had 4.0 GPAs in the spring.

America East separates honorees into two levels. Commissioner's Honor Roll recipients posted at least a 3.5 GPA. Honor Roll recipients had between a 3.0 and 3.49.

Student-athletes from the conference have averaged a 3.0 GPA or better each semester for the past 15 years.

"When our seasons were canceled in March, we challenged our student-athletes to focus on competing in the classroom, and they responded," athletic director Shawn Heilbron said. "We take tremendous pride in the academic success of our student-athletes, so this level of achievement is certainly something to celebrate."
