DURHAM, N.H. — The Stony Brook women's basketball team suffered a heartbreaker in its return to action on Saturday.
Amanda Torres' jumper with 13 seconds remaining proved the difference as New Hampshire defeated the Seawolves, 52-49, at Lundholm Gymnasium.
It marked Stony Brook's first game action in 20 days. The team had paused while following COVID protocols.
The Seawolves trailed 39-38 entering the final minute of the third quarter. But
India Pagan's layup with 28 seconds remaining in the period provided a lead entering the fourth quarter.
In all, Stony Brook (5-4, 3-2 AE) rattled off seven straight points to take a six-point lead.
Anastasia Warren produced a three-pointer and Pagan added another layup during the run as New Hampshire went scoreless for 6:51.
However, Paige Cote's three-pointer with 2:04 remaining pulled UNH back within 49-48. And that score held until Torres' jumper with 13 seconds remaining.
The Seawolves had a close-range shot in the final seconds for a potential lead go awry. New Hampshire (4-8, 4-5) then sank a pair of free throws with 1.3 seconds to go to cap the scoring.
Warren led the way for the Seawolves with 19 points. Her career high came at UNH a year ago, with a 24-point performance.
Pagan finished with 13 points, leaving her eight shy of joining the 1,000-point plateau for her career.
The teams complete their back-to-back games on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Durham.
