Men's Soccer Tripped Up Against Hartford

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The return to LaValle Stadium for men's soccer was spoiled by its foes from across the sound, as Hartford earned a 3-1 win over the Seawolves.

Stony Brook got a goal back late, as Gabe Fernandes headed home a Trausti Birgisson cross in the 86th minute, but that was the only goal the Seawolves could muster on the night.

The visiting Hawks scored with less than three minutes left in the half on a volleyed shot by Olivier Sylvain to earn a 1-0 lead. Hartford doubled its lead from the penalty spot in the second half, as Tomer Drimmer finished to the goalkeeper's right from 12 yards out. The final Hawk goal came off a set piece as Demario Cameron headed home a corner in the 67th minute.

Stony Brook had a chance with two seconds left in the half from the penalty spot, but Aki Solvason's kick was saved as he tried to also go to the keeper's right.

STATS AND NOTES
  • Fernandes' goal is number two on the year for him and his fifth point. The North Babylon native is up to eight career goals.
  • Birgisson added assist number three on the season and six for his career.
  • Kaiser finished the day with five saves, tying his season high. He also hit that mark in the squad's last home game, a 2-0 win over Vermont.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"I thought we played pretty even in the first half but their keeper put them in a great position to win the game. If we make our spot kick, it's 1-1 and and a different game at the half. Our defending in the middle of the box wasn't our best and that was the difference. We have to put our chances away and keep them off the board. This three points will be as valuable as the next three points, so we have to move forward and work to earn them next weekend.

UP NEXT
Stony Brook hits the road again next weekend with a Saturday date with UMBC on the docket in Baltimore. The October 9 kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
