Women’s Hoops Set to go Head-to-Head with Iona on Saturday: 5 Things to Know

THE MATCHUP: The Stony Brook University women's basketball team (4-0) heads to New Rochelle to face MAAC opponent Iona (2-1) on Saturday, November 20, at 1 p.m. The game is set to air on ESPN3.
 
SERIES HISTORY: The Seawolves are no strangers to the Gaels. This matchup marks the 14th time Stony Brook has faced off against Iona. Stony Brook is 8-5 against Iona with the most recent game taking place on Nov. 21, 2019, when the Seawolves defeated the Gaels, 59-40, on Long Island. The Seawolves and Gaels first went head-to-head on Dec. 8, 1999, when Stony Brook pulled away to win 60-53 at home.
 
ABOUT THE SEAWOLVES: The Seawolves are currently 4-0 in the 2021-22 season. After defeating Rutgers to secure the program's third win over a Power Five opponent, Ashley Langford became the first head coach in Stony Brook women's basketball history to begin her career 4-0. Stony Brook was picked as the preseason favorite in the America East Coaches' Poll. Graduate forward India Pagan and senior guard Anastasia Warren were both tabbed to the Preseason All-Conference Team. Stony Brook went 15-6 and 11-3 in the America East and made its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance facing the No. 3 seed Arizona in 2021. Stony Brook led the America East in scoring defense (52.0 ppg), blocked shots (75), rebounds (792), and rebound margin (+6.6). The Seawolves ranked fourth in the entire nation in scoring defense. Stony Brook has captured each of the last two America East Championships. In 2021, the Seawolves defeated Maine, 64-60, to claim its second championship in a row.
 
LAST TIME OUT: The Seawolves rolled past Rutgers, 53-44, in their fourth game of the season on Tuesday, November 16, at Jersey Mike's Arena. Stony Brook held Rutgers to 44 points, the fewest that any opponent has scored against them this season. The Seawolves finished the day with eight made three-pointers. It marked the first time since Nov. 25-Dec 4, 2018, that Stony Brook has made eight or more made three-pointers in four consecutive games. Warren led the team in scoring with 15 points, marking the third game in a row that she has scored 15 or more points.
 
ABOUT THE GAELS: The Gaels went 6-9, 5-6 in the MAAC last season. Billi Chambers enters her ninth season as head coach. Chambers led Iona to the program's first-ever MAAC tournament championship in 2016. In her debut season, Chambers led the Gaels to 26 wins, the most wins by a rookie head coach in conference history. Juana Camilion returns as the Gaels' leading scorer. The senior guard averaged 12.7 points per game over 15 starts last season. Camilion totaled nine points against Massachusetts, second to senior forward Ketsia Athias who scored 14 points. Iona fell to Massachusetts in their last game out, 79-56, marking their first loss of the 2021-22 campaign.
