Women’s Basketball Set to go Head-to-Head with Columbia on Wednesday: 5 Things to Know

THE MATCHUP: The Stony Brook University women's basketball team (5-0) travels to Manhattan to face Ivy League opponent Columbia (5-0) on Wednesday, November 24, at 1 p.m. The game is set to air on ESPN+.
 
SERIES HISTORY: The Seawolves are no strangers to Columbia as this matchup marks the 11th time that the teams will meet in history. Stony Brook is 6-4 against Columbia with the most recent game taking place on Nov. 22, 2016, when the Seawolves defeated the Lions, 55-53, on Long Island. Stony Brook and Columbia first went head-to-head on Feb. 4, 1986, when the Seawolves fell to the Lions 76-55 in New York, N.Y.
 
ABOUT THE SEAWOLVES: The Seawolves are currently 5-0 in the 2021-22 season. After defeating Iona to secure her fifth career win, Ashley Langford became the first head coach in Stony Brook women's basketball history to begin their career 5-0. The 5-0 start to the season is tied for the best start to a season in program history. The Seawolves have never started a season 6-0. Stony Brook was picked as the preseason favorite in the America East Coaches' Poll. Graduate forward India Pagan and senior guard Anastasia Warren were both tabbed to the Preseason All-Conference Team. Stony Brook went 15-6 and 11-3 in the America East and made its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance facing the No. 3 seed Arizona in 2021. Stony Brook led the America East in scoring defense (52.0 ppg), blocked shots (75), rebounds (792), and rebound margin (+6.6). The Seawolves ranked fourth in the entire nation in scoring defense. Stony Brook has captured each of the last two America East Championships. In 2021, the Seawolves defeated Maine, 64-60, to claim its second championship in a row.
 
LAST TIME OUT: The Seawolves defeated the Gaels, 53-46, on Saturday, November 20, at the Hynes Athletics Center. Stony Brook pulled away from Iona in the last 14 seconds with a three pointer from Leighah-Amori Wool to increase their lead to five. Stony Brook held Iona to 46 points, the fewest that the Gaels have scored against an opponent this season. The Seawolves have held their last two opponents to under 50 points scored. Pagan finished just shy of a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds and moved into 13th-place on the all-time scoring list with 1,148 points scored, passing Janet Travis (1,144). Pagan is also now 12 rebounds away from tying Brittany Snow for ninth-place in career rebounds.
 
ABOUT THE LIONS: The Lions went 17-10 in the 2019-20 season and 8-6 in the Ivy League.  The Ivy League did not compete in the 2020-21 campaign. Megan Griffith enters her sixth season as head coach. Griffith led Columbia to the program's first-ever Ivy League tournament appearance in 2019-20. She coached the Lions to its most Ivy League wins in eight years during the 2018-19 season. Abbey Hsu returns as the Lions' leading scorer. The sophomore guard averaged 14.3 points per game over 27 starts in the 2019-20 season. Hsu totaled 18 points against Georgetown, leading Columbia's scoring. Columbia defeated Georgetown in their last game out, 66-56, marking its fifth-straight win of the 2021-22 campaign.
