Men's Soccer Season Heartbreakingly Ends in Penalties

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — After a 1-1 draw in 110 minutes of playing action, the America East quarterfinals were decided from the penalty spot and, after making its first seven, Stony Brook's eighth kick was saved.

This opened the door for the visitors, UMBC, who made all eight of its spot tries, earning a spot in the semifinals and eliminating the Seawolves from the league postseason.

The two goals split evenly both came in ceremonious fashion, as a handball called on Stony Brook's Rondell Payne gave UMBC a spot kick they would not miss to take a 1-0 lead in the 54th minute. 63 seconds later, the Seawolves equalized, as Selcuk Kahveci's free kick from 25 yards was punched into the air, off a UMBC defender and into the net to even the scoring.

Stony Brook finished the 2021 campaign at 8-6-1 and 4-4 in the league.
