A New Era Begins as Women’s Basketball Tips Off 2021-22 Season Against Delaware State: 5 Things to Know

THE MATCHUP: Stony Brook tips off the 2021-22 season against Delaware State on Tuesday, November 9, at 6:31 p.m., inside Island Federal Arena on Long Island. The Seawolves welcome fans back to Island Federal for the first time since March 8, 2020. The game is set to air on ESPN+ with Sam Neidermann (play-by-play) and Rob Pavinelli (analyst) on the call. SERIES HISTORY: The Seawolves control the lead in the all-time series as they have posted a (2-1) record against the Hornets. Stony Brook and Delaware State have not met since December 28, 2005, when the Seawolves defeated the Hornets, 70-59. Stony Brook is 2-0 against Delaware State on Long Island. The Seawolves' first-ever win over the Hornets came on November 21, 2000, as they earned a 50-37 victory. The teams first met on February 2, 2000, when Delaware State knocked off Stony Brook, 59-52.
 
ABOUT THE SEAWOLVES: Stony Brook was picked as the preseason favorite in the America East Coaches' Poll. Graduate forward India Pagan and senior guard Anastasia Warren were both tabbed to the Preseason All-Conference Team. Stony Brook went (15-6, 11-3 America East) and made its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance facing the No. 3 seed Arizona in 2021. Stony Brook led the America East in scoring defense (52.0 ppg), blocked shots (75), rebounds (792), and rebound margin (+6.6). The Seawolves ranked fourth in the entire nation in scoring defense. Stony Brook has captured each of the last two America East Championships. In 2021, the Seawolves defeated Maine, 64-60, to claim its second championship in a row.
 
WELCOME TO LONG ISLAND COACH LANGFORD: Head coach Ashley Langford enters her first season at the helm. Langford was named the 10th head coach in program history on April 28, 2021, after serving as the associate head coach at James Madison. Coach Langford's staff is comprised of assistant coach/recruiting coordinator Shireyll Moore, assistant coach Delmar Carey, assistant coach Nicole Mitchell, director of basketball operations Arnika Edwards, and video coordinator Zach Goding.
 
AN OLYMPIAN ON LONG ISLAND: Pagan became the third Stony Brook student-athlete to compete in the Olympics as she represented her native Puerto Rico in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. With her Olympic debut, she became the first-ever Stony Brook women's basketball player to compete in the games. Pagan earned a silver medal at the 202 FIBA AmeriCup with team Puerto Rico along her international journey.
 
ABOUT THE HORNETS: The Hornets went (3-12, 2-8 MEAC) during the 2020-21 season. E.C. Hill enters her first season as head coach after spending the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Towson. Kiana Coomber returns as the team's leading scorer and rebounder. She averaged 9.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game over 14 games (12 starts) last season. The Hornets were picked to finish seventh in the MEAC Preseason Poll and Janasia Law was selected to the All-MEAC Preseason Third Team. Delaware State was edged by Georgian Court, 70-68, in an exhibition contest on November 6.
