STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook University redshirt freshman linebacker Tyler King was named a HERO Sports FCS Freshman All-American as announced on Tuesday. King becomes the first Stony Brook freshman to be named a HERO Sports Freshman All-American since Kyle Nunez claimed the honor in 2018.

"We are really excited about Tyler King's selection to the HERO Sports Freshman All-American Team. Very early in Tyler's career, he showed us the leadership off the field, in the weight room, and to see it transform to the football field this past season over an 11-game stretch being our leading tackler and a leader in the CAA in several categories. It is a well-deserved honor and I know he will continue to try to get better," said head coach Chuck Priore.

King concluded a standout 2021 season and was rewarded by being named to the All-CAA Second Team. In addition to earning All-Conference honors, King was one of 23 finalists for the 2021 Stats Perform FCS Jerry Rice Award, which was presented to the national FCS freshman player of the year.

The linebacker recorded 95 tackles (50 solo, 45 assists), 12.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, one interception, and one forced fumble in 11 games. King led all CAA rookies in total tackles and ranked fifth overall. His 50 solo tackles were the second-most in the conference this season.

The Wexford, Pa. native registered seven tackles or more in nine games this season and racked up 10 tackles or more in four games. He tallied a career-high 12 tackles in a game on two occasions. He first made 12 stops at Oregon on September 18. Later in the season, he totaled 12 tackles in a win over Delaware on October 16.

King took home the CAA Rookie of the Week award twice in 2021. He was first named the conference Rookie of the Week on September 20, and then claimed the honor on November 8.
