First Strike! Softball Opens Season with Seventh-Inning Magic

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Brooke Dye celebrated her birthday and the Stony Brook softball team's season opener in style.

Dye delivered a two-out, two-run double down the left-field line in the top of the seventh that plated Alicia Orosco and Jordyn Nowakowski. And the Seawolves defeated Bowling Green, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon in the opener to a four-game weekend tournament at Winthrop.

Stony Brook then swept its opening-day twin bill with a 9-4 win in the nightcap against Furman.

In Game 1, Dawn Bodrug picked up on her 2020 domination, limiting the Falcons to two hits and two walks while striking out 13 in a complete game. It was the junior-college transfer's sixth career complete game and fourth career double-digit strikeout game.

Dye, a sophomore second baseman from Auburn, Wash., had only a dozen at-bats a year ago, during her abbreviated first collegiate season.

"The two in front of me set the table," Dye said. " I went up there just ready to take advantage of the opportunity I had in front of me. That was the kind of excitement we've been waiting for, for a long time."

Bodrug produced a 0.74 ERA last season, leading America East and ranked eighth in Division I, while going 4-2 and striking out 76 batters in 47 innings.

In Game 2, Lindsay Osmer's tiebreaking two-run single in the fifth staked Stony Brook to a 5-3 lead.

Corinne Badger and Nicole McCarvill each produced two-run homers in the top of the seventh to open a six-run cushion. McCarvill went 3-for-5 in the nightcap.

Melissa Rahrich tossed a complete game with 10 strikeouts to earn the victory.

Stony Brook (2-0) plays Furman at 10 a.m. and Radford at noon on Sunday to complete its four-game trip to Winthrop University.
