Shorthanded Men's Hoops Tops UAlbany, Snaps Skid

ALBANY, N.Y. — The Stony Brook men's basketball team is back in the win column as the America East Tournament approaches.

Despite playing without key players Mouhamadou Gueye and Jaden Sayles, the Seawolves defeated host UAlbany, 59-43, on Saturday.

The Seawolves snapped a four-game losing streak.

With the teams tied at 27, Stony Brook erupted with 16 unanswered points to take command.

"We deserved to win because we just played so hard," coach Geno Ford said. "I thought on defense we really worked."

Minus Gueye and Sayles, junior Alex Christie made his first career start in his 32nd career appearance.

Tykei Greene produced his fourth double-double of the season. Juan Felix Rodriguez and Tyler Stephenson-Moore also scored in double-figures in the victory.

Stony Brook drained nine three-pointers, its most since matching that total against UAlbany in the quarterfinals last season.

The Seawolves held Great Danes to 25.9 percent shooting from the field, the lowest by a Division I opponent against Stony Brook this season. It also marked the fewest points surrendered by Stony Brook against a D-I foe in 2020-21.

Stony Brook (9-12, 7-8 AE) completes its regular season with a rematch against UAlbany on Sunday at 2 p.m.
