Women's Lax Routs BU as Another Matchup with Ranked Opponent Looms

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The Stony Brook women's lacrosse team rebounded in a big way on Sunday.

In a game scheduled only two day earlier, the sixth-ranked Seawolves routed Boston University, 20-10, at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.

Siobhan Rafferty and Ally Kennedy had five goals apiece, while freshman Jaden Hampel had a hat trick and two assists. Taryn Ohlmiller contributed a team-high four assists as well as five points.

"It felt amazing," said Hampel, who scored her first three collegiate goals. "It meant the world to me. Every since I committed, I've been waiting to play at this stadium."

Kennedy became the third player in program history with 200 career goals, joining Kylie Ohlmiller and Courtney Murphy.

Kennedy also had 13 draw controls — tied for third most in a single game in program history. The record belongs to Keri McCarthy with 16 against Vermont on March 30, 2018. Kennedy had a career-high 15 against Princeton last season.

Rafferty's five goals matched her career high, previously accomplished March 13, 2019 at UMBC.

Hayley Hunt made her collegiate debut, handling the second half in goal after Kameron Halsall departed with a 16-4 lead after intermission.

Stony Brook (1-1) rebounded from a season-opening loss at No. 1 UNC.

"I thought we played an efficient first half and took care of business," coach Joe Spallina said.

The Seawolves now have a quick turnaround. They host No. 13 USC on Tuesday at noon.

Spallina called the Trojans "underrated."

"They're a great team, so we're going to have to play markedly better than we did today," he said.
