Aiming for UMass Lowell Sweep, Men's Hoops Falls in AE Tourney

DURHAM, N.H. — The Stony Brook men's basketball team came up short trying to pull off a trifecta.

The seventh-seeded Seawolves lost to sixth-seeded UMass Lowell, 64-62, in the opening round of the America East Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Stony Brook had defeated the River Hawks twice during the regular season.

All-America East selection Obadiah Noel hit the tiebreaking jumper with five seconds remaining to lift UMass Lowell to the victory.

The Seawolves completed the 2020-21 season with a 9-14 record.

Stony Brook had opened a double-digit lead against the River Hawks on a layup from Leighton Elliott-Sewell midway through the first half. And the Seawolves eventually led by as many as 16 points.

However, UMass Lowell rallied to tie the score at 49 on a three-point play from Noel with 9:35 remaining. The River Hawks then took the lead a minute later on Kalil Thomas' three-pointer.

Stony Brook overcame a late six-point deficit with a 9-0 run to take the lead, but fell short at the end.

Stony Brook matched its most points in a first half before intermission with 43, then tallied its fewest in a half in the second half (19).

Juan Felix Rodriguez had a team-high 22 points in the defeat. Mouhamadou Gueye contributed six blocks, fifth most in a conference game in America East tourney history.

Gueye finished the season with 65 blocks for a two-year total of 129. The career and single-season totals both rank fourth-most in program history.

"I think the game was poetic. It was our season," coach Geno Ford said. "We just could never get anything sustained offensively."
