Within Point of Victory, Volleyball Tripped Up in America East Opener

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The Stony Brook women's volleyball team had been within a point of closing out a three-set sweep of UMBC on Saturday night at Pritchard Gymnasium.

Unfortunately for the Seawolves, they ultimately fell to UMBC, 22-25, 19-25, 26-24, 25-20, 15-13 in the America East opener.

The Seawolves had rallied from an 11-4 deficit in the third set to get within match point, 24-23, on Julia Kim's kill.

The teams then were deadlocked 13-all in the fifth and decisive set when Michaela De Marzi lifted UMBC within a point of victory with a kill. The Retrievers then closed out the match.

Ten different Seawolves nonetheless recorded kills in the defeat. Nia Wattley led the Seawolves with 14 kills.

Stony Brook dropped to 0-4 overall.

The teams meet again on Sunday at 11 a.m.
