ALBANY, N.Y. — The Stony Brook baseball team is off to a sizzling start in America East play.
The Seawolves swept a doubleheader from UAlbany, 9-3 and 14-6, on Saturday.
The pair of wins, on the heels of a ninth-inning comeback victory in the America East opener on Friday, lifted the Seawolves to 3-0 in conference play.
Stony Brook aims to sweep the four-game series on Sunday.
"Winning the first three games of the series is a credit to the guys' hard work in practice and their resilience and competitiveness from first pitch to final out," coach Matt Senk said. "The biggest improvement has clearly been offensively, which again is a credit to the hitters who have worked diligently on making improvements not only to their swing, but also their mental approach."
In Game 1 on Saturday,
Sam Turcotte took a scoreless effort into the fifth inning. By then, the Seawolves had taken command with a six-run top of the fifth that began with
Shane Paradine's RBI double.
Turcotte limited the Great Danes to one run on five hits while striking out 10 in a 114-pitch effort spanning six innings.
In Game 2, Stony Brook grabbed a 4-0 lead with a three-run second that included a two-run double from
Derek Yalon, followed by an RBI double from
Evan Giordano.
UAlbany took a 6-4 lead with a four-run fifth. However, a half-inning later, the Seawolves exploded for six runs.
Yalon, making his first two starts of the season in the doubleheader, drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the score. A wild pitch then plated
John LaRocca with the tiebreaking run.
Chris Hamilton followed with a two-run single. And Tuccillo capped the six-run frame with an RBI single.
Devin Sharkey then stranded the bases loaded in the bottom half. And Tuccillo capped a four-run seventh with a two-run single.
"Derek Yalon had been making tremendous strides in practice by arguably being one of our hardest workers," Senk said. "Unfortunately, he was dealing with some nagging injuries. But now that he's healthy, Derek has gone out and played at the high level he's been practicing."
