VESTAL, N.Y. — The youthful Stony Brook volleyball team showed promise as the season progressed. But the Seawolves abbreviated spring season ultimately ended short of the America East championship match.
Eliminated on the final day of the regular season, Stony Brook closed its season with a split against host Binghamton on Sunday, with both matches settled in straight sets.
The season's completion concluded the decorated career of reigning America East Defensive Specialist of the Year
Kiani Kerstetter. She finished second in program history in career digs with 1,595 – trailing only record-holder Lo Hathaway (1,780, 2011-15).
Unfortunately for the Seawolves, Kerstetter and
Enitan Omolewa were unable to play against Binghamton.
Stony Brook finished the season 7-5 in America East play.
"This has been such a challenging year for so many reasons," coach Kristin Belzung said. "I'm incredibly proud of our group for fighting through a lot of adversity and dealing with all of the changes and protocols along the way. It has not been easy, and they deserve a ton of credit for showing up to get better every day.
"Thank you to Kiani for everything she has done for our program these last four years. Her impact will continue to be felt in our culture for years to come. While she is a big loss, we have a bright future ahead with the young group that was on the court this year. I'm proud of the development they have shown in a short time and know we will be a more experienced team this fall thanks to the opportunity to compete this spring season."
