BALTIMORE — The overtime magic of last season unfortunately did not carry over to 2021.
Nick Dupuis scored the sudden-death winner on a man-up situation in the fourth overtime period and host UMBC defeated the Stony Brook men's lacrosse team, 13-12, in the America East opener on Saturday afternoon.
It marked the first conference game in second-year coach
Anthony Gilardi's Stony Brook career.
The Seawolves had won all three overtime games they played during last season's abbreviated campaign — with
Caleb Pearson scoring all three winners.
Tom Haun had a hat trick in the defeat, giving him 102 career goals. He became the eighth player in program history to reach triple-figures in that category.
Dylan Pallonetti and
Chris Pickel Jr. added two goals apiece.
The game was the longest in Stony Brook's Division I era.
"I thought we played hard and competed the entire game. It just comes down to executing the play that needs to be made, especially in the clearing game," Gilardi said. "The field was titled the entire second half, and we need to be able to get a stop and clear the ball. We had a lot of opportunities in the overtimes and just couldn't finish one."
The Seawolves (2-2, 0-1 AE), picked first in the America East preseason poll, return to action next Friday with a nonconference game against Syracuse at the Carrier Dome.
