Winning Ways Continue as Tennis Knocks Off Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, Conn. — The streak rolls on for Stony Brook tennis.

After losing the doubles point, the Seawolves rallied to win four of five singles matches in a 4-2 victory over Quinnipiac on Saturday night in Hamden, Conn.

Chandrika Joshi sealed the win at No. 4 singles, winning a third-set tiebreak to secure Stony Brook's third straight victory to open the season.

"Tonight's match was a big team effort, and really showed our character," coach Gary Glassman said. "We were down the entire match, but never stopped fighting. Chandrika was down 4-0 in the third set and saved three match points. However, she never flinched and got the clinch. It was a real indication of how much we've improved in a rather short period of time."

Stony Brook was not able to get on the board in the doubles portion of the night, but it did not phase the Seawolves.  The visitors stormed back to ensure their season-opening winning streak grew to three.

Jamie Wei took the point at No. 1 singles, with the bottom half of the lineup following suit with a win in singles bouts at four, five and six.

Joshi continued her hot start to 2021, earning her third consecutive win in singles. She took both of her matches this weekend in the No. 4 slot. Loreto Villalba Rubio earned her first singles victory of the season, winning a three-set thriller at No. 6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

The Seawolves head back to New England next weekend for matches against Rhode Island on Friday and Fairfield on Saturday.
