Late Surge! Matt Anderson Tallies Career-High 4 Goals, Men's Lax Tops NJIT

NEWARK, N.J. — Dylan Pallonetti had been held scoreless for the opening 44 minutes of Saturday night's Stony Brook men's lacrosse game at NJIT.

The Tewaaraton Award candidate would not be silenced.

Pallonetti scored goals 71 seconds apart to pull the Seawolves even and Matt Anderson then contributed the tiebreaker en route to a career-high output as 17th-ranked Stony Brook dodged an upset with a 12-8 win against the Highlanders.

Stony Brook (7-3, 5-1 AE) swept home-and-home meetings with NJIT. The Seawolves now have won five straight games — all against America East opponents.

Victories against NJIT have bookended the winning streak.

In the first meeting back on March 14 at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium, Stony Brook held NJIT scoreless over the final 49:21 and produced the game's final 10 goals en route to 13-4 win.

This time, fueled by 18 saves from goalie Liam Brown and four goals from Owen Corry, NJIT held an 8-6 lead late in the third quarter.

Stony Brook then asserted itself, tallying six unanswered goals while blanking NJIT for the game's final 18:05.

Pallonetti got on the scoreboard for the first time in the game with one minute remaining in the third quarter. He then scored the equalizer on a man-up opportunity 11 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Anderson gave the Seawolves their first lead since early in the second quarter when he scored with 11:57 remaining in the game.

"It was exciting for sure," said Anderson, who had a career-high four goals. "Mike McCannell made an amazing pass, and I just had to do the easy part. Coach Gilardi challenged us at halftime, and I think we really stepped up."

McCannell had a career-high six points (one goal, five assists). Five of those points came on Stony Brook's five fourth-quarter goals.

Pallonetti has now tallied a goal in all 10 of his collegiate games.

"We didn't come out with enough energy in the first half, but we regrouped as a unit and were able to get the energy that we needed for the second half and execute our game plan," McCannell said. "We just stuck to our strategy and moved the ball well in the fourth, which opened up opportunities, especially on man-up. We were able to capitalize to finish off the game."

Said Coach Anthony Gilardi: "We did a good job of finding a way to win. The guys stuck together and executed in the fourth when we needed them. Mike McCannell played really well. He dodged hard and was great orchestrating our man-up."
