RANDALL'S ISLAND, N.Y. — Richmond Boateng had one thing in mind before the 400-meter hurdles race on Friday at the St. John's Invitational: breaking the program record.
Then, 53.08 seconds later, he achieved that objective.
Boateng's record-setting time earned him his second consecutive win in the event. He previously won the Colonial Relays two weeks earlier.
It marked sophomore's first appearance in the program's record book.
He surpassed Terry Martin's 2012 time of 53.40.
"It hasn't really sunk in yet," Boateng said. "But this was one of my goals for this season. I told myself I was going to break the record today. So I'm glad I got it done."
It was one of two wins on the day for the Monroe native. He was a part of the winning 4x400m team, joining Patrick Abel, Matthew Cappock and Aleks Zdravkovic. The quartet finished in 3:19.14.
With the two wins on Friday, Boateng now has six wins this season.
"I attribute my success this season to my teammates and coaches," he said. "But most importantly to Coach Powell. He sees the best for me, and that pushes me to achieve more."
The two wins were part of a five-win day for the Seawolves, who had 15 top-two finishes.
Zdravkovic, a freshman, earned his first career individual victory, in the 400m. He finished in 49.04, nearly a second faster than his time on the same Icahn Stadium track less than a month ago.
Danella Dawkins won the 100m hurdles in her first collegiate competition. Dawkins ran a 14.53, topping second-place finisher Phoebe Myers.
Stony Brook also had a winner in the field events. Freshman Jaelyn Davis picked up her first individual collegiate win. Her 5.30m jump earned her a victory, finishing narrowly ahead of teammate Casey Pedone (5.03m).
Other top finishers on the women's side included:
● Dana Cerbone second in the 100m at 12.11, two-tenths of a second behind St. John's Onassha Rogers.
● Amanda Stead second in both the 200m (24.20) and 400m (55.24), giving her nine top-three finishes this season.
