STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Brett Paulsen keyed a walk-off win for the second time this season. And
Evan Giordano delivered a pair of prodigious blasts at a pivotal time.
As a result, the Stony Brook baseball team completed a four-game sweep of UMBC with 8-7 and 7-5 victories on Sunday at Joe Nathan Field.
Paulsen's single in the bottom of the seventh plated
John LaRocca for the walk-off victory in the opener. LaRocca had led off the inning with a double.
In Game 2, Giordano blasted a game-tying two-run homer over the batter's eye in center field in the seventh as Stony Brook knotted the score at 4. LaRocca's run-scoring groundout plated
John Tuccillo later in the frame for the lead. Then, an inning later, Giordano launched another two-run homer.
"I wasn't quite sure it was going over because it was a line drive," Giordano said about the game-tying homer. "It went over, and it was a great feeling to get the game tied up and get the energy back on our side."
Starter
Nick DeGennaro shook off a four-run fifth to earn the win. He tossed his first career nine-inning complete game, and the first by a Stony Brook player since
Brian Herrmann against Maine on April 7, 2018.
The Seawolves improved to 15-1 in America East play. They already have swept three four-game series this season.
Paulsen also had delivered a walk-off squeeze bunt in the 10th inning in a 6-5 win against Hartford on April 3.
"I had two strikes, and ultimately I just wanted to get him over," Paulsen said about Sunday's Game 1 heroics. "I got the job done and we got the win."
