SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — One down, two to go.
The Stony Brook women's tennis team started convincingly with a pair of 6-1 doubles wins and did not look back en route to a 4-0 win over seventh-seeded Northern Iowa in the opening round of the 2021 Missouri Valley Tennis Championship on Friday.
"The ladies did a great job of keeping a high level of intensity and cool level of calm," head coach
Gary Glassman said. "We really hit the equanimity we strived for today. The doubles point helped set the tone for the entire match. We'll need to bring that same level for tomorrow's match."
The pairings of
Jamie Wei/
Sasha Bekirova and
Loreto Villalba-Rubio/
Elizabeth Pam started the Seawolves on the right foot to secure the doubles point. Then,
Mathilde Sreeves joined Bekirova and Rubio with singles wins to make sure the second-seeded Seawolves wouldn't need more than the minimum to move into the semifinals.
Villalba-Rubio earned the first singles point of the afternoon, winning 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5.
Sreeves used a shutout second set to clinch the win at No. 3.
Bekirova won 6-2, 7-6 at No. 2 to finish off the match.
Stony Brook will play third-seeded Missouri State in Saturday's semifinal at 3 p.m. EDT.
