STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Julianna Sanzone picked an opportune time to produce her first collegiate homer.
Sanzone delivered a game-tying solo homer to center field in the third inning and
Melissa Rahrich plated
Jourdin Hering with an RBI single later in the frame as the first-place Stony Brook softball team defeated UMass Lowell, 2-1, in Game 1 on Wednesday at University Field.
Stony Brook then completed the doubleheader sweep with some seventh-inning magic.
Kyra McFarland's one-out RBI single plated
Shauna Nuss with the tying run. The Seawolves then won the game, 3-2, on
Lindsey Osmer's walk-off single.
"Right off the bat I knew I was going to win it," said Osmer, who also had delivered a walk-off RBI single in the eighth inning against Hofstra on April 6.
In Game 1,
Dawn Bodrug tossed her 15th complete game of the season and struck out 12.
Rahrich moved within four RBIs of matching Shayla Giosia for the program's career record (163). Giosia's all-time singles record fell to Hering last weekend.
Sanzone, a freshman from East Meadow, was making her sixth start of the season.
"I've been waiting for it," Sanzone said about her long ball. "It's about time I got one of those pitches to hit out. Coming around first base I was like, 'Yep, I can start taking a jog.'"
In Game 2, Rahrich limited the River Hawks to one earned run in a complete game.
Hering's RBI double in the fifth pulled Stony Brook within a run.
Shortstop
Nicole McCarvill made a pair of dazzling plays in the top of the seventh to keep the deficit to one run at that point and allow for the comeback.
Stony Brook returns to action this weekend with a three-game series at UAlbany.
