BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — As it now enters the America East Tournament as the conference's regular-season champion, the Stony Brook baseball team offered a glimpse of its future on Saturday.
With multiple starters resting on the final day of the regular season,
Matt Brown-Eiring blasted a three-run homer and fellow freshman
Idris Carter had a two-run triple in the nightcap as Stony Brook split a doubleheader with Binghamton, losing 5-4 and winning 6-3.
Stony Brook completed the regular season 29-17 overall and 25-10 in conference play — the most wins ever by an America East program in the league in a single season.
Brown-Eiring's homer was the first of his career and provided a 3-1 lead in the fourth. Carter's two-run triple opened a five-run cushion two innings later.
Carter's first two career hits are now triples — on consecutive days at Binghamton no less. He attempted an inside-the-park homer on Saturday but was thrown out at the plate.
Johnny Decker made a pair of dazzling plays in left field in Game 2 as he returned to the starting ilneup after a month-long injury absence.
The America East baseball tournament opens Thursday at Joe Nathan Field with Stony Brook hosting Maine at 11 a.m. UAlbany and NJIT will follow at 2:30 p.m.
