STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Two outs from elimination, the America East regular-season-champion Stony Brook baseball team awakened Friday.
Evan Giordano delivered a two-out walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to cap a three-run frame as the Seawolves rallied for a 3-2 win in an elimination game against UAlbany in the America East Tournament on Friday at Joe Nathan Field.
Stony Brook (30-18) advanced to an elimination game on Saturday against Maine.
"Ultimately I didn't want to go home yet," said Giordano, who plated
John LaRocca witha single to right-center. "It was a great feeling seeing everyone come together at the last minute."
Quipped coach
Matt Senk: "Piece of cake."
Brett Paulsen had delivered a game-tying RBI single with one out in the frame. Pinch hitter
Derek Yalon had opened the inning with a double.
Giordano was mobbed by teammates at second base after the dramatics.
"I was hurting there at the bottom for a little bit," Giordano said about the dog pile. "I'd take that over a loss. It was awesome."
Said Senk: "It's just a credit to the guys. There are a lot of things that go through your mind at that point in the game, in the season, in the tournament. The big thing is we had people in scoring position (all game). Hopefully the law of averages are going to work to our advantage."
Jared Milch earned the win with a complete game.
"I'm so happy for these guys that we can keep on playing in this tournament and see what happens," Senk said.
