STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Cole Durkan displayed his versatility on Sunday and the Stony Brook baseball moved oh-so-close to clinching America East's regular-season title with a split against NJIT.
After his walk-off squeeze bunt plated
Evan Fox in the opener, Durkan delivered a go-ahead three-run homer in Game 2 as the Seawolves won 4-3 and then fell 7-5 at Joe Nathan Field.
Stony Brook, aiming to avenge its only America East series loss of the season, which came two weeks earlier against the Highlanders, split this four-game series.
Playing their final regular-season home games of the 2021 season, the Seawolves moved to 24-15 overall and 20-8 in America East. They have road series remaining at UMBC and Binghamton.
Stony Brook owns a six-game lead in the loss column over the next-closest America East teams with eight games remaining.
NJIT had taken a 3-0 lead in Game 2 on Sunday. But
John Tuccillo got Stony Brook on the scoreboard with a solo homer in the fourth. And Durkan plated
Shane Paradine and
Stanton Leuthner with a three-run shot later in the frame.
Fox's RBI groundout in the sixth opened a 5-3, but NJIT answered with four runs in the eighth as Stony Brook's bullpen struggled with its command.
Kyle Johnson handled both ends of the doubleheader in relief, earning the win in Game 1 after recording the final four outs and taking over for
Sam Turcotte to open the seventh in Game 2.
