STONY BROOK, N.Y. — With her first career goal,
Catharina von Drigalski sent Seawolves fans home happy on Sunday afternoon, as her goal with less than 10 seconds left in the first overtime period gave the Stony Brook women's soccer program a 2-1 victory over Saint Joseph's.
Aneta Sovakova played the junior defender in to the box and she hit it with the front of her foot to the far post, giving the Seawolves a well-earned victory at LaValle Stadium.
The match was held scoreless through the first 77 minutes of the day but had a furious ending, seeing three goals in the final 23 minutes of action.
Alicia D'Aoust started the scoring, firing a rocket into the top corner to give Stony Brook the lead.
Saint Joseph's equalized just over three minutes later, after a long ball found the feet of Rachel Brown, whose left-footed shot found its way past
Emerson Richmond Burke to even the proceedings. After the Seawolves were able to control the first, 10-minute period, von Drigalski was able to take the feed from Sovakova and end the game with eight seconds on the overtime clock.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"We did a really good job of switching the field. It was a quick combination with Aneta [Sovakova] on the outside and then I just saw the open goal and scored ... I think we got the outside defenders involved really well and the midfielders were able to get up the field. That helped us in scoring more goals" - junior defender
Catharina von Drigalski.
"I honestly got teary-eyed because it's been a long time since I've been able to make an impact on the field like that. I really had to earn my way back up to get minutes and my teammates have been so supportive and it was a great feeling ... The further into the game we got, the harder we went.
Emma Beattie won a big header and it seemed to give us all confidence and once I saw them gain confidence, I gained confidence. We were due for a win so this feels really good" - senior forward
Alicia D'Aoust.
"We like to play a proper game, passing the ball and movement. We don't normally like it to be physical, however, with conference play coming up, that's how a lot of our games are going to be and today was a good test for that. Overall, it's good to score two goals. It's not easy to score two goals but I thought we had instances where we probably could have had more with a couple free headers and shot opportunities we passed on. [Heading into overtime], it was going to be the team who made the least mistakes. It was all about mental toughness and being prepared for the stuff you can't be prepared for and we were smart on the ball and it helped us win." - head coach Tobi Bischof.
