Kunz Racks Up 20 Kills as Seawolves Split Final Day at Maryland Invite, Goes 2-1 for Tournament

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Sophomore Leoni Kunz recorded 20 kills to help the Stony Brook volleyball program earn its second win of the weekend at the Maryland Invitational, taking down Akron in five sets to finish 2-1 in College Park and earn a third consecutive winning weekend in non-conference tournament play.

The Seawolves ran a near-perfect final set, recording 10 kills and no errors on 22 swings to aid Stony Brook's case in taking the deciding frame. Kristin Belzung's club would win the match 25-23, 19-25, 25-17, 26-28, 15-9.

Stony Brook hit .335 on the match, their third-most efficient hitting percentage of the season. Four different Seawolves recorded double figure kills, including Enitan Omolewa, who had an errorless day with 15 kills.

Maryland won the opening match in straight sets. Kunz joined Abby Campbell to lead the squad with eight kills each.

STATS AND NOTES
  • After not being able to secure a win in its first tournament, Stony Brook went 6-3 in its final three non-conference weekends.
  • Both the 15 kills and .625 hitting percentage are a career high for Omolewa.
  • Kunz's 20 kills also are a new career mark, besting her 19 against Tarleton State on September 10.
  • The record chase is on for Kiani Kerstetter, who sits at 1756 career digs. She needs 25 to break Lo Hathaway's career record of 1780.
  • Freshman Erin Garr completed a standout weekend, finishing with 30 kills.
  • Amiyah De'Long matched her career high with 17 kills. She hit that number against Columbia one day prior.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"Overall, this weekend was a solid finish to our non-conference play. I think we really figured some things out and had different people step up in moments which is a great confidence builder heading into conference. I also thought we were really solid defensively which allowed us to have success in transition. I'm excited to have an entire week of training to get prepared for America East play next weekend." - head coach Kristin Belzung.

UP NEXT
The Seawolves open up league play next weekend in Baltimore, taking on defending league champions UMBC at 1 p.m. The squad's home opener in league play will be October 8, taking on New Hampshire at 6 p.m. at Pritchard Gym.
