NEWARK — Despite outshooting the host NJIT Highlanders 14-5 on the night and drawing 11 fouls, the Stony Brook women's soccer team could not find a goal in its second consecutive road conference test, dropping a 1-0 decision Thursday night on the western side of the George Washington Bridge.
The Seawolves were able to tally 10 of their 14 in the second half and create a late flurry of possession and pressure but NJIT's set piece in the 57th minute stood up as the deciding goal.
Stony Brook's best chance on the night came in the 79th minute, when
Alyssa Francese turned towards the top of the box and fired a left-footed shot that dipped towards the far post, but was tipped away but NJIT's keeper. It was one of six saves she had to make on the night.
STATS AND NOTES
- The loss capped Stony Brook's season-long winning streak at four.
- 14 shots marked the third consecutive game the Seawolves hit double figures in shots and the fourth time in the last five contests.
- NJIT's five are a season low in shots, besting the six they allowed against LIU on August 26.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"We played an okay game today but in the end we just were not able to create enough chances to win. Credit to their keeper, she made a great save towards the end to protect the lead. Credit to NJIT, who never stopped working hard throughout the whole game." - head coach
Tobias Bischof.
