Women's Soccer Hangs Tough with Pac-12's Colorado in Sunday Loss

BOULDER, Colo. — Sophomore Emerson Richmond Burke made five saves on the afternoon but the Stony Brook women's soccer team (1-3-1) was not able to muster up enough offensive firepower in a 2-0 defeat at Colorado on Sunday afternoon.

The hosts out of the Pac-12 took advantage of a height advantage in the box with two header goals: one came in the 50th minute off a Shanade Hopcroft corner that found the head of Hannah Sharts, while the next came in the run of play with Shyra James knocking in a Hailey Stodden delivery from the flank in the 73rd minute.

The Seawolves' best chance came in the middle of the first half, when Chelsie DePonte slid free in the 20th minute but could not get enough of the ball with her right foot, creating an easy save for the Colorado keeper.

Burke's highlight of the day came in the 59th minute, punching away a hard shot headed to the corner.

STATS AND NOTES
  • Burke's five saves are one off her season and career high, last set at Providence on September 2.
  • She now has 11 saves between the posts in the last 180 minutes of action.
  • Freshman Alexa Jindal also produced a shot on frame for the Seawolves, the third time she has come off the bench and recorded one this season.
