Women’s Basketball Travels Up North to Face Maine on Sunday: 5 Things to Know

THE MATCHUP: The Stony Brook University women's basketball team (10-2, 1-1 America East) travels up north to face Maine (5-8, 2-1 America East) on Sunday, January 9, at 2 p.m. The game is set to air on ESPN+.
 
SERIES HISTORY: The Seawolves and Black Bears are no strangers to each other as this matchup marks the 47th time these two teams will go head-to-head. Stony Brook currently holds a 22-24 record against Maine. The first time these two teams saw each other was on January 11, 2001, when the Seawolves defeated the Black Bears, 68-57, on the Island. The last time the teams squared off, the Seawolves pulled ahead of the Black Bears, 64-60, in the America East Championship game on March 12, 2021, to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
 
LAST TIME OUT: Stony Brook defeated Hartford, 77-39, on Sunday, January 2, to secure its first win in conference play. India Pagan led the scoring for the Seawolves finishing with 18 points, followed closely by Leighah-Amori Wool who tallied 17 points. Stony Brook shot 100 percent from the free-throw line (12-of-12), marking its best free-throw percentage in a game this season.  
 
CARRER MILESTONES: Wool recorded her 1,000th career point in the victory over Hartford. She finished the game with a season-high 17 points, the most points that she scored in a game as a member of the Seawolves. Gigi Gonzalez dished out a career-high eight assists against the Hawks. Junior guard Veronica Charles pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds. Pagan scored 18 points and moved into 12th-place on Stony Brook's all-time scoring list with 1,220 career points as she surpassed Sabre Proctor (1,205 points).
 
CONVERTING AT THE LINE: Stony Brook currently boasts an 80.5 free-throw percentage which sits them fourth in the nation amongst the NCAA ranks. This is currently the Seawolves' best single-season free-throw percentage in program history, beating their previous best from the 2013-14 season (72.7). Annie Warren ranks ninth in the nation holding a 93.3 free-throw percentage (28-of-30) this season. She knocked down a perfect 7-of-7 against NJIT on December 30.   
 
SCOUTING THE BLACK BEARS: The Black Bears took down the Hawks, 65-44, on Wednesday, January 5, in West Hartford, Conn. With the win, Maine improved to 5-8, 2-1 America East on the season. Maine's scoring offense is led by junior guard Annie Simon. Simon currently leads the Black Bears and the America East averaging 16.0 points per game over 13 starts. Head coach Amy Vachon is in her sixth year at the helm. Vachon has been named America East Coach of the Year three seasons in a row and has led the Black Bears to two America East Championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances. Vachon also led Maine to the 2020-21 America East Championships where it fell to Stony Brook, 64-60.
