Volleyball Claims Victory in Five Set Thriller at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. - The Stony Brook University volleyball team concluded play at Delaware with a weekend split, defeating the Blue Hens in a five-set thriller on Sunday afternoon.

After securing the first set, Stony Brook dropped the next two in close deficits, with the second set resulting in a four point defeat (25-21) and the third set culminating in a three point loss (25-22). The Seawolves then bounced back with a gritty effort to secure the fourth and fifth sets, closing them out 27-25 and 15-9, respectively.

Stony Brook's offense was fueled by the trio of Kali Moore, Abby Campbell, and Erin Garr who all finished the match with 10 or more kills. Defensively, the Seawolves were led by Julia Patsos and Moore who tallied 30 and 22 digs, respectively.

With today's win, Stony Brook improves to 5-0 in matches that go five sets this season. Stony Brook previously defeated Fordham (Aug. 28 at home), Georgetown (Sep. 3 at home), Seton Hall (Sep. 11 on a neutral court), and William & Mary (Oct. 2 in Virginia) in five sets.

STATS AND NOTES
  • Moore set two career-highs and tallied her ninth double-double of the season with 23 kills and 22 digs. She is the first Seawolf to finish a match with 20 or more kills since Kunz totaled 20 kills against Akron on September 18, 2021.
  • Campbell and Garr joined Moore in totaling 10 or more kills in the match, with Campbell collecting 13 on .361 hitting and Garr picking up 10 on .235 hitting.
  • Setters Torri Henry and Julia Kim combined for 58 assists. Kim's 25 assists were a season-high, while Henry dished out 33 assists. Henry recorded 30 or more assists in a match for the 13th time this season. She also added nine digs to go along with her 33 assists.
  • Patsos led the way defensively and recorded a career-high 30 digs. She is the first student-athlete to pick up 30 or more digs in a match since Kiani Kerstetter tallied 33 digs against UMBC on November 19, 2021.
  • Junior outside hitter Lauren Schmitz registered nine kills and nine digs as she fell just short of a double-double.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"So proud of this group! We approached this match with a different competitive spirit and it was a full team win. We were able to execute adjustments both offensively and defensively throughout the entire match and that showed grit. Every road win is big and this one is better because I thought we played at a high-level. We have another important road weekend coming up and will need this same level of focus," said head coach Kristin Belzung

UP NEXT
The Seawolves continue on the road and head to Boston to take on conference rival Northeastern on Saturday, October 22 and Sunday, October 23, both with first serve at 2 p.m.
