Women's Hoops Returns to Island Federal Arena to Face-Off Against UMass Lowell: 5 Things to Know

THE MATCHUP: The Stony Brook University women's basketball team (23-3, 14-2 America East) returns home to Island Federal Arena to take on UMass Lowell (9-14, 6-8 America East) on Wednesday, February 23 at 7 p.m. The game is set to air on SNY and ESPN+ with Sam Neidermann (play-by-play) and Rob Pavinelli (analyst) on the call.
 
SERIES HISTORY:
This matchup marks the 26th time these two teams will go head-to-head. Stony Brook currently holds a 19-7 record against UMass Lowell. The last time the Seawolves faced-off against the River Hawks, Stony Brook pulled away with a win, 69-65, on Wednesday, February 9, in Lowell, Mass.
 
LAST TIME OUT: The Seawolves defeated Hartford, 95-69, on Saturday, February 19, marking their 23rd win of the season and 14th in the conference. Forward India Pagan led the scoring for the Seawolves raking in 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field. Earlette Scott followed closely behind finishing with 18 points. Annie Warren knocked down 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the field and finished with a team-high three three-pointers. Senior forward Nairimar Vargas-Reyes came off the bench to grab a team-high 10 rebounds and score seven points.
 
TRENDING UPWARD:
Stony Brook secured their 700th victory in program history over UMBC on Wednesday, February 16. The Seawolves' 22 wins this season are the sixth-most in program history and the fourth-most in its Division I era. Stony Brook has won 20 or more games in three out of the last four seasons and collected a program record 28 victories during the 2019-20 campaign. For the third week in a row, Stony Brook has received votes in the WBCA Top 25 Coaches Poll on Tuesday, February 15.
 
STRONG ISLAND BASKETBALL: The Seawolves did not let up on defense against the Hawks winning the battle at the boards, 38-30. Stony Brook is now 18-0 when they out-rebound their opponents. The Seawolves dominated down low scoring more than half of their points in the paint (54). Stony Brook shot 53.6 percent from the field, the second-highest field goal percentage this season since the team shot 57.1 percent against UMass Lowell on February 9. The 37 made field goals are a new season-high for the Seawolves (made 35 vs. Delaware St. on Nov. 11, 2021).
 
SCOUTING THE RIVER HAWKS: The River Hawks fell to the Highlanders, 58-51, on Monday, February 21, in Newark, N.J. With the loss, UMass Lowell dropped to 9-14 (6-8 America East) on the season. UMass Lowell's scoring offense is led by senior guard Kharis Idom. Idom currently leads the team averaging 10.2 points over 22 starts. Junior forward Denise Solis follows closely behind averaging 9.8 points over 22 starts. Head coach Denise King is in her first year at the helm of UMass Lowell. King served as the former assistant coach and recruiting coordinator since 2018.  King was named the ninth head coach in program history on May 20, 2021. This is King's second appearance against Stony Brook as head coach.
