TAMPA, Fla. – The Stony Brook University softball team (8-4) picked up a split on the first day of the USF Tournament in Tampa, Fla. The Seawolves began the day by defeating UMass, 7-6, and then fell to Big Ten power Ohio State, 6-3, in the second game of the afternoon.
The Seawolves used an early offensive explosion to mount a 7-0 lead over the Minutemen in the first game of the day. The lead proved to be insurmountable as Stony Brook held on to win by the final score of 7-6. The Seawolves were led by senior infielder
Nicole McCarvill who launched her first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the top of the third inning.
Timely hitting allowed Stony Brook to add to its lead over the first five innings. Graduate pitcher
Dawn Bodrug came on in relief and tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless ball to pick up her first career save and clinch the victory for the Seawolves.
GAME 1: STONY BROOK – 7, UMASS – 6
- Senior pitcher Shelbi Denman started the game for Stony Brook and pitched 5.2 innings and allowed six runs (all earned) on eight hits and struck out two. The senior picked up her fourth win and improved her record to 4-2 on the season.
- Bodrug earned her first career save as she tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless softball ball. The graduate entered the game in the bottom of the sixth inning and struck out Grace Gadden to close the frame. She went on to punch out two more batters in the seventh en route to her first save.
- Sophomore utility Catherine Anne Kupinski opened the scoring for Stony Brook with an RBI double to left center in the top of the third inning. She later drove in another run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth. She went 1-2 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored in the game.
- McCarvill went 1-3 on the day with the two-run home run and a walk. It was her first homer of the season and first since April 25, 2021, at Maine.
- Sophomore outfielder Alicia Orosco went 2-3 with a double, two runs scored, and a stolen base. It was her third multi-hit game of the season.
- Sophomore infielder Kyra McFarland went 1-2 with a double and a run scored.
GAME 2: STONY BROOK – 3, OHIO STATE – 6
- Bodrug earned the start for Stony Brook and tossed her fifth complete game of the season. The graduate pitched 7.0 innings and allowed six runs (all earned) on 10 hits. She struck out three and walked three. It marked her 31st career complete game.
- Kupinski continued her hot hitting in the second game by driving in a pair of runs with a ground-rule double that chased in McFarland and Orosco in the bottom of the third inning. She went 1-3 in the game with the double and two RBI.
- Junior catcher Corinne Badger tallied the Seawolves' first run of the game as she scored on a wild pitch.
- McFarland went 2-4 at the dish with a run scored and a stolen base. The sophomore has now reached base safely in 11 consecutive games and is on a three-game hitting streak. It also marked her third multi-hit game of the season.
