QUEENS, N.Y. – The Seawolves and Red Storm locked up in a pitcher's duel on Wednesday afternoon in Queens, with St. John's coming away with a narrow, 1-0, victory. Stony Brook received a standout pitching performance from senior
Shelbi Denman who went the distance and tossed her fifth complete game of the season.
The Red Storm pushed the lone run of the day across in the bottom of the first inning when Denman surrendered an RBI single to London Jarrard. From there, the senior went on to pitch 6.0 innings and allow just the one run (earned) on six hits. She struck out seven and did not walk a batter in 6.0 innings of work. The seven strikeouts tied her second-most in a game this season.
Junior outfielder
Shauna Nuss made the play of the day for the Seawolves in the bottom of the fifth inning to rob St. John's Natalie Alheidt of extra bases. Alheidt drove a ball to left, Nuss broke perfectly on it, chased it down, and went crashing into the fence to make the catch.
Stony Brook's bats accounted for four hits in the game with one going for extra bases. Sophomore utility
Catherine Anne Kupinski drove a triple to left center field to lead off the top of the sixth inning. The Red Storm then worked out of the jam and did not allow Kupinski to score in the frame.
STATS AND NOTES
- Denman is now 5-5 on the season following today's decision. She tossed her fifth complete game of the year and the 17th of her career.
- Kupinski was 1-3 at the plate with a triple. The triple was the first of the season for the sophomore.
- Sophomore outfielder Alicia Orosco, sophomore infielder Kyra McFarland, and freshman outfielder Alyssa Costello each tallied one hit apiece for the Seawolves.
- Costello extended her hitting streak to 10 games in a row.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"This was a tough game but a winnable one. Shelbi gave us a great effort in the circle and a chance to win, and our defense was outstanding to keep it close. Our approach wasn't there offensively. In tight games, you have to make the most of your opportunities. We will turn the page and get after it tomorrow," said head coach
Megan T. Bryant.
