Softball Splits Mid-Week Twin Bill with Manhattan

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – After dropping the first game of the doubleheader, Stony Brook rallied back and took game two to split the twin bill with Manhattan on Thursday on Long Island. The Jaspers took game one by the final score of 4-3 and the Seawolves came away with the victory in game two by the final score of 6-1.

A first inning three-run home run by Megan Hedlund gave Manhattan an early 3-0 lead in the opening game. Stony Brook was able to plate a pair of runs in the second inning as junior catcher Corinne Badger brought in a run with an RBI ground out and senior infielder Lindsey Osmer ripped an RBI double down the left field line.

Manhattan added another run in the top of the third inning when Gabriella Mazzotta singled home a run. Stony Brook responded in the bottom half of the third with an RBI single by sophomore infielder Ashley Jacobson to cut the Jaspers' lead. Manhattan closed the door from the point forward and held on to win by the final score of 4-3.

Graduate pitcher Dawn Bodrug tossed another gem en route to her 14th win of the season. The graduate tossed a complete game and struck out 12 as she shutdown Manhattan's offense and helped the Seawolves to a game two victory.

Stony Brook's offense got going in the second game as it totaled six runs on eight hits. Badger opened the scoring with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman outfielder Alyssa Costello broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-run double and Osmer followed with an RBI single to extend Stony Brook's lead to 4-1.

Sophomore infielder Kyra McFarland provided insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two-run single to center field to give the Seawolves a 6-1 lead, a score they would hold on to win by.

GAME 1: STONY BROOK – 3, MANHATTAN – 4
  • McFarland went 3-3 at the dish with a run scored in game one. She reached base all four times as she was also hit by a pitch in the game.
  • Osmer was 2-4 with a double and an RBI. Osmer plated a run with a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the first inning.
  • Jacobson ripped her first triple of the season and went 2-4 at the plate with an RBI. She drove in a run with an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning.
  • Sophomore infielder Sofia Chambers went 2-2 at the plate with a pair of singles.
  • Junior pitcher Ashton Meelas went the distance and allowed four runs (all earned) on eight hits. She struck out five and walked none in her sixth start of the season. It was her second complete game of the year and first since the win against Sacred Heart on March 31.
GAME 2: STONY BROOK – 6, MANHATTAN – 1

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"We needed to bounce back after game one. We did a lot of good things in game one, but we weren't as productive offensively as we could have been. We stayed within ourselves at the plate in game two and that outfield played deep all day and there were hits in front of them. I thought we tried to get a little too big in game one in RBI situations. We did a much better job of just hitting within ourselves, being productive, and passing the bat on to the next batter in game two," said head coach Megan T. Bryant.
