RICHMOND, Va. – The Stony Brook men's basketball program is nearing their debut in the Colonial Athletic Association as the conference announced the 18 games each of its 13 members will play during the 2022-23 campaign.
Head coach
Geno Ford enters his fourth-year at the helm of Stony Brook. Ford's squad will compete in six home-and-home series with Hofstra, Monmouth, North Carolina A&T, UNC Wilmington, Northeastern, and William & Mary. The Seawolves will face off against Drexel, Elon and Towson once at The Island and hit the road for one matchup against Charleston, Delaware and Hampton.
Stony Brook is coming off one of their highest scoring offenses in the past six years. The Seawolves poured in 80 points or more on 12 occasions during the 2021-22 campaign, doubling the previous two seasons combined. Not only are they looking to continue their hot scoring, but also want to continue to defend home court. Island Federal Arena holds one of the best home-court advantages over the last 10-plus seasons, with Stony Brook winning 70 percent of its games or more, going 31-13 over the last two-plus years at The Island. The Seawolves also totaled three wins against 2021-22 NCAA Tournament teams, with two coming at Island Federal Arena.
The CAA featured four teams with 21 wins or more during the 2021-22 season, with Towson and UNCW sharing the league's regular season title, going 15-3 in league play. The fifth-seeded Blue Hens upset second-seeded UNCW, 59-55, to secure the program's sixth conference championship. Drexel defeated Elon in the 2021 championship, while Hofstra took down Northeastern in 2020.
The conference as a whole had three national postseason tournament appearances totaling four wins in the 2022 campaign. Towson earned a NIT bid, while UNCW went on to win the CBI.
Frankie Policelli and
Tyler Stephenson-Moore return to lead Stony Brook's offense. The two combined for more than 400 points last season; Stephenson-Moore led the scoring from beyond the arc, shooting 44.8 percent while Policelli knocked down a career-high 72 field goals.
