Volleyball Earns Fifth Consecutive Victory; Sweeps Hampton in Virginia

HAMPTON, VA --The Stony Brook volleyball team got the job done and earned their fifth-straight win after defeating the Hampton Lady Pirates in three sets (25-12, 25-10, 25-18) on Saturday at Holland Hall.
 

The Seawolves were led by a double-double from Leoni Kunz, who registered a team-high 11 kills and 12 digs on the day. Kali Moore also added nine kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Julia Patsos chipped in for 15 digs to go along with four blocks from Kunz.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

SET 1 | The Seawolves grabbed control on the first point and never looked back to win the first set 25-12. Kunz got the set going by tallying three kills in the first seven points to give Stony Brook a 6-1 advatange. Later, the Seawolves would get back-to-back-to-back kills by Abby Stanwood to give themselves a 19-9 lead and ultimately the 13-point victory. 

SET 2 | Stony Brook took set two 25-10 to quickly jump to a 2-0 lead. The Seawolves grabbed control of the set lead early on at 2-1 following the kill from Ayanna Pierre Louis and held the lead the rest of the way. Stony Brook opened its biggest lead of the stanza, 15 points, after a kill by Moore to finish off the set. The offense also got a boost from eight aces in the stanza, including five-straight by Torri Henry to give Stony Brook a 20-9 lead. 
 

SET 3 | Stony Brook took the third set to sweep the match. The Seawolves grabbed control of the set early when the score was 6-5 from a Pierre Louis service-ace and never looked back to win 25-18. Stony Brook led by seven points at 23-16 after a kill by Moore before Moore closed out the stanza with another kill. The squad totaled 15 kills along the way and had a .286% in the match-securing set. 

GAME NOTES

  • Stony Brook had four players in double figures in digs (Patsos, Moore, Kunz, and Henry). 
  • Torri Henry had a match-high six aces in the win.
  • Leoni Kunz registered a double-double with a match-high 11 kills and 12 digs. It was her fourth double-double of the season, all coming in the last five matches. 
  • The Seawolves got a match-high 15 digs from Julia Patsos. She has 10 or more digs in 15 of 18 matches this season. 
  • Stony Brook attackers were helped by a match-high 32 assists from Torri Henry. Henry has 30 or more assists in 14 of 18 matches this season and tallied her fourth-straight double-double. 
  • The squad never trailed on the way to winning the first set 25-12.
  • Stony Brook served up eight aces on the way to a second-set victory.
  • This is the Seawolves' first five-game winning streak since they won 17 straight in 2018. 
  • The win moved the Seawolves' record to 9-9 overall and 4-3 in CAA action.

The Seawolves return to the court tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the second of two matches against the Lady Pirates in Hampton. The match is set to broadcast on FloVolleyball.
