WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The No. 3 Stony Brook men's soccer team had their 2023 campaign come to an end on Thursday night after falling 1-0 to No. 6 Elon in the first round of the CAA Championships at Hesse Field on The Great Lawn at Monmouth University.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the back and forth first half, both teams traded shots in the first 25 minutes, including a shot by Jonas Bickus in the 17th minute that came inches away from giving the Seawolves the early advantage. The Stony Brook goalkeeper Edmond Kaiser was brilliant in the first 45 minutes of play by capturing four saves to keep the match tied heading into the break.
Following a shot from
Moses Bakabulindi in the 48th minute to get the second half action started, the Phoenix responded right back with a shot of their own from Victor Stromsten that found the back of the net to give Elon the 1-0 advantage.
Stony Brook would rip five more shots over the next 25 minutes and Kaiser made another five saves in the second half but the Phoenix held on to ultimately take the 1-0 victory at Monmouth University.
STATS AND NOTES
- Kaiser piled up nine saves for the Seawolves out of 17 total Phoenix shots. Kaiser finishes his season with a career-high 85 saves, the most in the CAA.
- Stony Brook recorded five shots on goal.
- Jon Jelercic, Sean Towey, Lorenzo Selini, Bas Beckhoven, Jacson Coppack, Bickus, and Kasier all played 90 minutes.
- The Seawolves are now 1-2 all-time against the Phoenix.
