Haynes Tosses Shutout in Historic Win Over #23 Mississippi State; Offensive Rally Leads Softball to Victory Over Bethune-Cookman

BOCA RATON, Fla. –  The Stony Brook softball team (2-1, 0-0 CAA) made a statement on the diamond at the second day of the FAU Paradise Classic on Saturday.

In their first game of the day, the Seawolves knocked off the No. 23 Mississippi State Bulldogs. Stony Brook is the first team that is currently in the Colonial Athletic Association to beat a ranked opponent since 2018.

In their second game, the Seawolves came from behind to earn the win. Bethune-Cookman scored five runs in the first inning and Stony Brook blanked the Wildcats the rest of the way. The Seawolves scored eight unanswered runs to win their second game of the day.

GAME 1: STONY BROOK – 1, NO. 23 MISSISSIPPI STATE – 0
  • Stony Brook totaled four hits in the game. Junior center fielder Alicia Orosco, junior shortstop Kyra McFarland, senior catcher Corinne Badger, and senior right fielder Shauna Nuss all collected a hit.
  • With two outs in the top of the third inning, Stony Brook started a rally to score its first run. Nuss singled to left field and stole second base. Orosco then bunted for a single and the Seawolves had runners at the corners with two outs. McFarland was able to put the ball in play on a check swing and Nuss scored on a fielding error to go up 1-0.
  • Junior Mia Haynes made her Stony Brook debut in the pitcher's circle. She tossed a complete game shutout, going 7.0 innings and collecting a pair of strikeouts. Haynes threw 117 pitches in the win.

GAME 2: STONY BROOK – 8, BETHUNE-COOKMAN – 5
  • After falling behind 5-0 in the first inning, Stony Brook tied the game with five runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Seawolves added one in the fourth and two runs in the fifth to go up 8-5.
  • In the bottom of the third, sophomore Alyssa Costello stepped up to the plate in a big spot with runners on base. With the bases loaded and two outs, down 5-1, Costello hit a bases-clearing double to drive in three runs.
  • Junior second baseman Sofia Chambers was the very next batter. Chambers ripped an RBI single, driving in Costello from second base, which tied the game at 5-5.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, junior utility Catherine Anne Kupinski drove in Nuss from third base with a sacrifice fly, which gave Stony Brook its first lead of the game.
  • Stony Brook got important insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore catcher Emily Reinstein drilled a frozen rope off the wall in right field for a two-run triple. The Seawolves led 8-5 and the score would remain the same the rest of the way.
  • Sophomore pitcher Maddie Male took over for senior pitcher Ashton Melaas in the second and pitched 6.0 innings to earn her first career win. Male tossed two strikeouts, the first of her career, and surrendered just three hits.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"This was a great day for our team in the way we played, fought, and executed. We responded well after the loss on Friday to come out and play better. It's a step in our process and an important one," said head coach Megan T. Bryant.
