NORFOLK, Va. – The Stony Brook softball team (3-4, 0-0 CAA) took on the Buffalo Bulls and the Norfolk State Spartans in the Norfolk/Hampton Battle at the Bay on Friday.
The Seawolves were on the right side of a run-rule, shutting out Buffalo in their first game of the day. A massive two-out rally in the fourth inning propelled Stony Brook to the victory.
Stony Brook was on the wrong side of a run-rule, falling to the multi-team event host Norfolk State in its second game of the day.
GAME 1: STONY BROOK – 8, BUFFALO – 0 (5 INNINGS)
- The Seawolves exploded offensively, beginning in the third inning. Junior Alicia Orosco, junior Kyra McFarland, and sophomore Alyssa Costello began the third inning with back-to-back-to-back singles.
- With the bases loaded and one out in the third inning, junior Ashley Jacobson ripped a two-run single, driving home Orosco and McFarland to give Stony Brook a 2-0 lead.
- Junior Catherine Anne Kupinski came up right after Jacobson and came through with a sacrifice fly to drive in Costello from third base to extend the Seawolves' lead to 3-0.
- Stony Brook continued its offensive explosion in the fourth inning with five consecutive hits with two outs. Costello ripped an RBI single to left field to bring home senior Shuana Nuss, who led off the inning with a hit. Graduate Corinne Badger drove home Costello with an RBI single to make it 5-0. Jacobson came up and smacked an RBI double to right field, bringing home Badger to make it 6-0. Kupinski then came up and belted a two-run home run to make it 8-0.
- Kupinski hit her first home run of the 2023 season and the third of her career.
- Eight of the starting nine hitters in the lineup had at least one hit and four student-athletes had multiple hits for the Seawolves.
- Junior Mia Haynes started in the pitcher's circle and racked up a Stony Brook career-high six strikeouts. She did not allow a run in five innings of work.
- Stony Brook run-ruled an opponent for the first time this season and first time since April 23, 2022, against Hartford.
GAME 2: STONY BROOK – 3, NORFOLK STATE – 11 (5 INNINGS)
- The Seawolves recorded three hits in the game, including a two-run home run from Badger. It marked Badger's first home run of the season.
- Stony Brook later scored in the fifth inning, when McFarland hit a sacrifice fly to bring home sophomore Emily Reinstein.
- Badger finished the game going 1-for-2 at the plate with two runs batted in and a run scored.
- Norfolk State hit five extra base hits, propelling it to victory.
NEXT UP
Stony Brook will return to the diamond on Sunday, Feb. 26, when it plays Central Connecticut State at 10 a.m. to close out the Norfolk/Hampton Battle at the Bay.
