Softball Drops Saturday Doubleheader at Elon

ELON, N.C. – The Stony Brook softball team (6-10, 0-3 CAA) took to the diamond for the final two games of the series against Elon (9-14, 3-0 CAA) on Saturday at Hunt Softball Park.
 
In their first game of the day, the Seawolves were run-ruled by the Phoenix, 10-2, in six innings.


 
In the second game, Stony Brook got off to a hot start taking an early 2-0 lead after a solo home run by senior infielder Brooke Dye and a RBI by junior outfielder Julianna Sanzone. Elon answered back with a run of its own in the fifth.


 
The Seawolves increased their lead to 3-1 in the sixth off a RBI single to center field by junior outfielder Alicia Orosco However, Stony Brook would not be able to hold on as the Phoenix would come from behind, scoring three runs in the sixth to secure the 4-3 victory.
 
GAME 1: STONY BROOK – 2, ELON – 10
  • Sanzone went 1-3 at the plate and gave the Seawolves their first run of the contest when she brought in Orosco off a fielder's choice.
  • Junior infielder Ashley Jacobson recorded the second run for the squad, smashing the ball deep over the center field fence for her second home run of the season.
  • Junior infielder Kyra McFarland, freshman infielder Naiah Ackerman, and Orosco all recorded a hit in the contest.
GAME 2: STONY BROOK – 3, ELON – 4
  • Dye went 2-3 on the day, including her first home run of the season and first run for Stony Brook in the top of the third.
  • Sanzone went 1-3 at the dish and added a RBI when she brought in Dye in the fifth inning.
  • Orosco recorded a hit and a RBI in the contest when she knocked a single into to center to bring in freshman infielder Hailey Guerrero.
  • Junior pitcher Mia Haynes got the start in the circle and tossed 6.0 innings with three strikeouts.
  • Ackerman went 1-1 at the plate and Guerrero recorded a run scored.
