Softball Drops Home Opener Series to Hofstra

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook softball team (8-13, 0-6 CAA) fell to the Hofstra Pride (8-13, 3-0 CAA), 4-1, in the final game of its home opener series on Sunday afternoon at University Field.

The Seawolves held the Pride scoreless and only allowed one hit for the first two innings of the contest. It wasn't until Hofstra's Angelina Ioppolo hit a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Kasey Collins in the third inning that the Pride took a 1-0 lead.

Stony Brook and the Pride continued to battle for three more innings. However, it would be Hofstra that would come out on top in the sixth inning courtesy of a two RBI single to center field.

The Pride added another run to increase their lead to 4-0 in the top of the seventh. The Seawolves would not stay quiet for long as junior utility Catherine Anne Kupinski smashed a solo home run over the left field fence to cut Hofstra's lead.

Unfortunately, it would not be enough as the Pride would run away with the 4-1 victory.

STATS AND NOTES
  • Kupinski slugged her third home run of the season and second in two days. The junior went 1-3 at the plate.
  • Junior outfielder Alicia Orosco paced the Stony Brook lineup with three hits in four at-bats. Orosco also tallied a stolen base and has reached base safely in eight-straight games.
  • Junior Infielder Sofia Chambers went 1-3 at the dish with a double in the seventh inning.
  • Melaas tossed 6.0 innings and gave up three runs (earned) on seven hits. Junior pitcher Mia Haynes pitched 1.0 inning of relief and allowed one run (earned) on two hits.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"We swung the bats pretty well in game one and we didn't do much of it in games two and three. That was not as much a factor in game two, certainly a factor today. I thought Alicia Orosco was really the only one that was on point. I know Kupinski came up late with the home run, but we just didn't do what we needed to do offensively today. I thought our pitching and defense, especially in these conditions was good," said head coach Megan T. Bryant.

NEXT UP
Stony Brook is back in action on Wednesday, March 22, when it hosts St. John's for a mid-week game at University Field. First-pitch is set for 2 p.m. and the game will broadcast live on FloSoftball.
