CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Stony Brook baseball team (0-9, 0-0 CAA) fell today, March 5
th, in their series-finale against the No. 11 North Carolina Tar Heels (9-3, 0-0 ACC), 15-4.
Junior
Evan Fox paced the Stony Brook offense today by mashing three extra base-hits, including his second home run of the weekend and eighth homer of his career. Also, Fox extended his hit-streak to six games and has six hits in his last three games.
Getting the ball for Stony Brook was freshman
Eddie Smink, making his first career start for the Seawolves. The hard-throwing right-hander struck out Vance Honeycutt and Mac Horvath to begin the game. Then, after two Tar Heels reached base, Smink kept his composure and produced a strike-out swinging.
Following a quiet second inning for Stony Brook, the Tar Heels jumped on the scoreboard first by hitting two two-run home runs and an RBI single, giving the home team the 5-0 advantage. Graduate
Kyle Johnson came into the game and stranded two runners on base, giving the momentum back to the Seawolves heading into the third.
Stony Brook responded right back with the home run to left field by Fox, making it 5-1 in the third inning. Johnson gave Stony Brook a chance out of the pen, as the right-hander stranded two runners in the third and fourth innings, keeping the Tar Heels in their place.
After getting out of the fourth inning, the Seawolves again gained one run on one swing following a lasering-shot to left field by sophomore
Chris Leone, making it a three-run game. This was the first career home run for the Long Island native.
The Tar Heels got a run back in the bottom of the fifth on a fielding-error, but in the next inning, the Seawolves made the most of the pitching change for the Tar Heels.
Graduate
Evan Giordano started the rally with a base-hit, followed by junior
Shane Paradine grounding into a fielder's choice, and then junior
Matt Brown-Eiring reached on a walk, giving Stony Brook two runners on with one out. After UNC made another pitching change, sophomore
Matt DeStefano loaded the bases on a base-hit. The Tar Heels would bring another arm in, but senior
Brett Paulsen did his job by driving in Paradine on a fielder's choice and freshman
Matthew Wright reaching on an error, allowing DeStefano to score.
Trailing 6-4 in the bottom half of the seventh, the Seawolves allowed three runs, and then surrendered six runs in the eighth to ultimately loss the game, 15-4.
