STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook softball team (11-16, 2-8 CAA) dropped its second game, 5-2, against UNC Wilmington (14-17, 8-3 CAA) on Saturday afternoon at University Field.
Just like in game one, the Seahawks started off hot, scoring the first run of the contest in the first inning after their starting pitcher Janel Gamache doubled to right center to bring In Arial Pearce.
However, unlike the first game, the Seawolves responded quickly to UNC Wilmington's hot hitting, plating a run of their own in the bottom of the first to tie the contest, 1-1. The run came courtesy of a single to center from junior infielder
Ashley Jacobson that plated junior outfielder
Julianna Sanzone.
Stony Brook's defense was able to hold the Seahawks scoreless after the run scored in the top of the first until the top of the fifth inning. In the fifth, UNC Wilmington took back the lead after bringing in four runs to go up 5-1.
The Seawolves kept fighting and scored their second run in the seventh inning when freshman infielder
Naiah Ackerman grounded into a double play which allowed sophomore outfielder
Alyssa Costello to score. Unfortunately, it would not be enough as the Seahawks secured the 5-2 victory.
STATS AND NOTES
- Junior utility Catherine Anne Kupinski went 2-3 at the plate and knocked her second career triple.
- Jacobson went 1-2 at the dish and tallied the Seawolves' only RBI on the day.
- Costello and Sanzone both went 1-3 and added a run scored.
- Senior infielder Brooke Dye recorded a hit in the contest.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"I thought we played a better ball game than what we did yesterday. We did a much better job defensively, especially against their lefties and where we fell short was with our situational hitting," said head coach
Megan T. Bryant.
