Softball Earns Split at Towson, Melaas Goes The Distance

TOWSON, Md. --The Stony Brook softball team (21-24, 6-13 CAA) bounced back after dropping their first game of the CAA doubleheader against Towson University (25-21, 14-9 CAA) this afternoon to defeat the Tigers 7-1 to earn the split and set up a rubber game tomorrow in Towson, Md.

Sophomore Alyssa Costello paced the Seawolves offense this afternoon by tallying a 6-for-8 performance with an RBI and two runs scored over the two games. The left fielder extended her hitting-streak to 13 games and has registered a multi-hit performance in four of her last five games.

In the game one defeat, the Seawolves sent out junior Mia Haynes to make her team-high 21st start of the season. The right-hander struck out three batters and allowed five runs (earned) over six innings in the circle.

The Seawolves got on the scoreboard first after junior Ashley Jacobson knocked in junior Alicia Orosco to take the early 1-0 advantage.

The Stony Brook defense came up clutch for Haynes in the third inning. Costello made her presence felt in the field by making a highlight reel play in left field to end the inning and keeping the Tigers off the scoreboard.

But, the Tigers exploded for four runs in the fifth and one run in the sixth to take a 5-1 lead. The Seawolves didn't stop fighting and responded in their final chance at the plate. In the seventh, senior Brooke Dye led the inning off with a single to left field followed by back-to-back doubles down the left field line by junior Sofia Chambers and Orosco. Towson would limit the Seawolves to just that and hold on to the 5-3 victory.

Looking to even up the series, Stony Brook answered in the second game of the doubleheader by opening up the game with three runs in their first turn at the plate. After Orosco and Costello got back-to-back knocks to begin the game, the Seawolves went to work with two outs as senior Corinne Badger, junior Julianna Sanzone, and first-year student Naiah Ackerman knocked back-to-back-to-back hits, giving Stony Brook an early 3-0 lead.

That is all the runs the Seawolves would need with senior Ashton Melaas in the circle. The right-hander earned her eighth win of the season by allowing one run (earned) in the sixth inning, struck out three, and allowed four hits in her complete game performance. This was the ninth complete game of the season for Melaas.

Following a perfect 1-2-3 inning for the senior, Melaas kept her composure in the next inning by stranding the Tigers loaded in the second. Over the third, fourth, and fifth innings, Melaas retired 9 of the 11 batters that she faced.

In the seventh inning, the Seawolves dropped another four runs on the Tigers to give themselves the seven run advantage heading into the bottom of the sixth. Sanzone knocked in Badger, Dye drove in Sanzone, and Costello brought home Orosco in the frame. Also, Dye scored on a wild pitch, giving the Seawolves the 7-0 lead and ultimately the 7-1 victory.
